The government has suspended the imposition of the controversial 15 percent electricity tax.
The Ministry of Finance in a statement said “On behalf of the Government, MoF would like to inform ECG and NEDCO to suspend the implementation of the VAT directive pending further engagements with key stakeholders including Organised Labour.”
The Ministry, it said expects that the engagements will birth innovative, robust, and inclusive approaches to bridging the existing fiscal gap, while bolstering economic resilience.
The government had announced the introduction of a 15 percent tax on electricity which has since sparked controversies in the country at least in the Labour front.
The Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) had threatened to stage a demonstration on the tax to be levied on residential electricity consumption.
The association emphasized its role as a key member of organized labour and therefore deemed it necessary to stand in solidarity with the cause.
In a statement addressed to all its members on Tuesday, February 6, GNAT instructed its regional secretariats to ensure active participation in the demonstration.
