President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has expressed his heartfelt gratitude to Ghanaians for their resilience against the COVID-19 pandemic.
He thanked the Ghanaian population for keeping safe against the virus and responding to all the safety protocols introduced by the government to guard against the spread of the virus.
The commendation of the President was contained in a Special Message that Minister of Finance, Ken Ofori-Atta, read in his presentation of the 2022 Budget and Economic Policy of the government on Wednesday 17th November, 2021.
The President assured that the government together with the Ghanaian people will fight against the virus and together fight to win.
Speaking on the disease, Mr. Ken Ofori-Atta indicated that as COVID-19 swept through the world it exposed the weakness of the critical structures in education, the economic lives of communities and everyday family life.
The pandemic, he said triggered a sharp and heaviest spending in global supply chains, as lockdowns and restrictions led to reductions in demand and production levels.
He averred that the pickup in demand for goods this year has also created a new inflationary problem with a consequential rise in the cost of shipping, disruption of the global supply chain and exacerbated by increasing world fuel crisis.
“The spiralling costs of shipping has hit businesses hard, particularly small and medium scale enterprises.”
“SMEs have had to struggle the economic fallout from their pandemic and now they are being forced to cope with the rising costs of shipping.”
“This is making the lives of traders and consumers very difficult,” he added
The finance Minister noted that the hardship Ghanians have experienced under COVID-19 is not lost on the government and stressed the government has been there with the people during the difficult times and providing the necessary balancing act of managing an economy put under extreme distress by the pandemic and at the same time supporting households and businesses to cope.
Government’s response to COVID-19, he said, has earned both domestic and worldwide acclaim as the President and Ghanians will attest to that.
