The Ga community in Ghana is strongly urging the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) to encourage its 2024 flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, to select a running mate from the Ga tribe.

Advocates argue that the Ashantis, Akyem, and Northern regions have already held prominent positions as President or Vice President, emphasizing the need to consider Ga representation.

Supporters of this cause believe that there are qualified and competent individuals within the Ga community who can effectively partner with Dr. Bawumia to achieve the “break the 8” agenda.

Opinion leaders of Ga Dangbe descent express dissatisfaction with what they perceive as the party’s continual neglect of key positions, particularly in the presidency.

They are calling on the NPP to choose a running mate from the Ga tribe to collaborate with the newly elected flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, in the upcoming 2024 election.

Advocates emphasize the straightforward nature of their request, asserting that several Ga individuals are influential and capable of helping the NPP secure more votes in the Greater Accra region.

Advocates note the historical contributions of Ga stalwarts to the United Party (UP), the NPP’s mother party, with the Ga Shifimokpee being one of the political parties that contributed to the formation of the UP.

They stress that personalities of Ga origin, such as Daniel McKorley (McDan), Okoe Boye, Shirley Ayorkor Botchway, and Oboshie Sai Kwofie, played pivotal roles as founding members of the party’s tradition.

Expressing concern that Ga people seem to have been relegated to the background within the NPP, advocates believe that selecting a Ga running mate is a way to remember and honor the legacies of these founding members.

They underscored the strategic importance of Greater Accra in the success of any political party and argue that appointing a Ga as the NPP’s running mate would enhance the party’s chances of achieving the “break the 8” goal.

Advocates are optimistic that the party’s leadership will heed their request, emphasizing that as a region, they play a strategic role in deciding the outcomes of general elections.

They contend that selecting a Ga person as the running mate could change the party’s fortunes in the Greater Accra region, emphasizing that the Ashanti region is not the sole region capable of securing power for the party.
