The Ghana Police Service has assured the media of its unwavering commitment to ensuring their safety during the upcoming 2024 General Elections.
This assurance was emphasized during a stakeholder engagement held on Wednesday, November 20, 2024, at the Police Headquarters in Accra.
The meeting brought together senior journalists, news editors, and Police leadership, led by the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Dr. George Akuffo Dampare.
Addressing participants, Dr. Dampare underlined the media’s critical role in the electoral process as the fourth estate of the realm, necessitating the Police’s full support and protection.
“The media is an indispensable stakeholder in this year’s elections, and their ability to operate safely and freely is paramount to the success of Ghana’s democratic process,” the IGP stated.
He further lauded Ghana’s status as a leader in democratic governance, attributing this achievement to the collaboration between institutions like the Police and the media.
To bolster media safety, the Police announced the deployment of liaison officers for all media houses across the country. These officers will act as direct communication links between the Police and media establishments, addressing security concerns swiftly and effectively.
Additionally, the IGP revealed the introduction of a dedicated toll-free number, developed in collaboration with telecommunications companies, to enable the public to share relevant information with the Police.
Dr. Dampare urged journalists to adhere to the highest standards of accuracy in their election coverage, cautioning against misinformation and disinformation that could destabilize the nation.
“The media wields significant influence in shaping public discourse. Let us all work together to make the 2024 elections a hallmark of peace, security, and order,” he added.
The IGP expressed confidence that the measures in place will allow journalists to fulfil their responsibilities without fear or interference, irrespective of their location during the election period.
He called on all stakeholders to join forces in presenting Ghana as a beacon of democracy and stability to the world during the 2024 elections.
