The 2024 general elections in Ghana have brought significant changes to the political landscape.

Several prominent women from the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) have lost their parliamentary seats.

3news.com has a detailed account of the top NPP women who were unseated, including who they lost to and the margins of their defeat.

Ursula Owusu-Ekuful

Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, the incumbent Member of Parliament for Ablekuma West, lost her seat to the National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate, Rev. Kweku Addo. In a keenly contested election, Owusu-Ekuful garnered 26,575 votes, while Rev. Addo secured 31,866 votes2. This defeat marks a significant shift in the constituency, which had been a stronghold for the NPP.

Hawa Koomson

Mavis Hawa Koomson, the incumbent MP for Awutu Senya East, was defeated by the NDC’s Phyllis Naa Koryoo Okunnor. Koomson received 46,638 votes, while Naa Koryoo won with 50,886 votes4. This victory for the NDC candidate highlights the changing political dynamics in the constituency, which had been represented by Koomson since its creation in 2012.

Lydia Alhassan

Lydia Alhassan, the incumbent MP for Ayawaso West Wuogon, lost her seat to actor-turned-politician John Dumelo of the NDC. Alhassan garnered 39,214 votes, while Dumelo emerged victorious with 47,560 votes. This marks a significant achievement for Dumelo, who had previously contested the seat in 2020 but narrowly lost to Alhassan.

Akosua Asaa Manu (Kozie)

Akosua Asaa Manu, affectionately known as Kozie, contested the Adentan Constituency seat but was defeated by the incumbent NDC MP, Mohammed Adamu Ramadan. Manu secured 35,143 votes, while Ramadan retained his seat with 56,303 votes. This win makes Ramadan the first MP to successfully retain the Adentan seat, breaking the constituency’s history of one-term MPs.
