Four opposition political parties have joined forces to call for a massive nationwide demonstration on Monday, May 5, 2025, in response to what they describe as the “unlawful suspension” of the Chief Justice and the “unlawful termination” of public service appointments under the current administration.

At an emergency meeting held last Thursday, the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG), National Democratic Party (NDP), and People’s National Party (PNP) issued a joint statement condemning what they labeled as a “reckless assault” on Ghana’s Constitution and judicial independence.

“The blatant disregard for the rule of law is not merely a political matter; it is an assault on the very soul of our democracy. We will not allow political power to erode the foundations of our republic,” the statement said.

The political parties accused the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) of orchestrating a calculated attack on key constitutional institutions, beginning with the judiciary.

They referred to historical events, including the alleged plot in 2010 to remove Ghana’s first female Chief Justice, Georgina Theodora Wood, as evidence of a longstanding pattern.

“History is being repeated today. The NDC’s obsession with capturing and controlling every arm of government, even the independent judiciary, is playing out before our eyes. We must not remain silent,” they added.

According to the parties, this is not about party politics but about protecting the rule of law and ensuring that the judiciary remains the last bastion of Ghana’s democracy.

The parties claim that there are broader plans afoot beyond the Chief Justice’s suspension and that intelligence reportedly points to attempts to also remove the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission and her deputies, potentially leading to the domination of all state institutions ahead of the 2028 elections.

“There is a covert and dangerous plan to reconstitute the Supreme Court with loyalists who would reinterpret Article 66(2) of the Constitution to enable John Mahama to seek a third term. This cannot be allowed to happen. Ghana must rise,” they alleged.

The parties also criticized what they termed the unlawful termination of appointments of innocent public servants under Mahama’s leadership, describing it as politically motivated and vindictive.

“Is this the future Mahama promised? A regime of fear, where livelihoods are sacrificed on the altar of political vengeance?”

Civil society groups, religious organizations such as the Christian Council of Ghana and the Ghana Pentecostal and Charismatic Council, and all patriotic citizens have been urged to join the protest.

“This is a fight for Ghana. This is a fight for our future. This is a fight for justice,” the parties declared.

The demonstration is expected to take place in all regional capitals, with Accra set to host the largest rally at the Independence Square.

The political parties ended their statement with a powerful call to action, warning that now is the time to act.

“Now is the time to raise your voice. Be a citizen, not a spectator. Stand for democracy. Oppose dictatorship,” they urged.
