The Ministry of Youth and Sports has responded to claims by the Director-General of the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC) regarding the payment of over $3 million for production and broadcasting services during the 13th African Games.

The Ministry’s clarification came after the issue was raised by Hon. Samuel Nartey George, Member of Parliament for Ningo Prampram, during a Public Accounts Committee (PAC) sitting on Monday, August 19, 2024.

At the PAC session, Hon. Mustapha Ussif, Minister for Youth and Sports, stated that GBC received more than $3 million for their services.

The Director-General of GBC, however, later countered this and claimed they had not received the full amount.

The Ministry, in a release, indicated that through the Local Organising Committee, it received proposals for production and broadcasting rights, some of which were more than $6 million. However, it engaged GBC because their quotation was the lowest, at $3.6 million.

The Ministry Youth and Sports broke down the payments made, noting that $2.5 million had been directly paid to GBC in two tranches: $1 million on March 13, 2024, and $1.5 million on May 22, 2024. Additionally, per the contract’s stipulations, $1 million was paid to third-party service providers on behalf of GBC.

“The total amount agreed upon was $3.6 million, of which GBC has received $2.5 million directly, and another $1 million was paid to third parties upon their instructions,” the Ministry clarified.
