The Member of Parliament for Ablekuma West, Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, has urged Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin to ensure calm prevails in the House, warning that the 8th Parliament risks being remembered as the worst in Ghana’s history if the ongoing chaos continues.
Expressing concern over the increasing disorder in Parliament, Owusu-Ekuful emphasised that it is the Speaker’s responsibility to restore order and prevent further disruptions.
She referenced the chaotic scenes that occurred during Bagbin’s election as Speaker, underscoring the need for decisive leadership to maintain the integrity of Parliament.
Her remarks come amid escalating tensions, with both the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and National Democratic Congress (NDC) caucuses claiming majority status, fueling ongoing disputes.
Owusu-Ekuful made these comments while speaking to the media on the sidelines of the official launch of an industry forum and the inauguration of an independent assessor by the Cyber Security Authority.
She urged all parties involved to work towards maintaining peace and stability in Parliament for the sake of national progress.
“I am concerned about the image that this eighth parliament is creating for itself as the most chaotic Parliament that we’ve ever seen. And I think it’s wrong and it’s bad and it doesn’t do the image of Parliament any good. I don’t think there is anything to be gained in rowdyism or fights on the floor of Parliament.”
“I will urge the Speaker to sit with the leadership… Let’s deal with this challenge in a cool-headed manner and at the end of the day Parliament as an institution, our democracy will be the winner.
“If we don’t take care, we will have done a great disservice, not just to ourselves but to succeeding generations and will go down in history as the worst Parliament, if not one of the worst led by a speaker because a speaker is supposed to bring order to the house.
“He doesn’t want all this to degenerate under his watch. The manner in which he was sworn in, or he rose through this position was acrimonious enough, we don’t want him to end his tenure with another acrimonious situation. And I think it’s incumbent on him to let cool heads prevail,” She stated.
