Member of Parliament for Buem, Kofi Adams, has urged Ghanaians to consider the upcoming December 7 election as an opportunity to ‘retrieve’ significant public funds mismanaged under the current Akufo-Addo/Bawumia New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration.
He stressed the importance of electing leaders focused on accountability, pointing specifically to John Dramani Mahama’s call for ‘Operation Retrieve All,’ a campaign aimed at recovering over GH¢51 billion allegedly lost to corruption.
Speaking on TV3’s Saturday morning analytical political show, The Key Points, Kofi Adams, who addressed the role of the Auditor General during the show, criticized the difficulties Parliament has faced in working with the Auditor General to ensure accountability.
He said, “The Auditor General is not an officer of Parliament,” Adams explained. “It’s been very difficult, even with Parliament directing the Auditor General to undertake certain actions.”
He noted that the process typically involves the Auditor General presenting reports to the Public Accounts Committee, which are then reviewed and brought to Parliament’s plenary for approval before action is taken.
“Once approved, we write what we must to the Attorney General for prosecution,” he added.
With the election less than a month away, Adams encouraged citizens to consider Mahama’s “Operation Retrieve All” initiative as a way to ensure funds are restored to the state for development purposes.
“If you want your GH¢51 billion back to the state, to be used for development, vote on December 7 to bring about change. Keeping those who have overseen this mismanagement at various levels means you will never get your money back,” Adams stated.
“If you want your money back, vote for a leader who will go through the books and recover what has been lost,” he added
