The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has called on political parties to focus on presenting constructive policies to the electorate, rather than resorting to divisive or inflammatory hate speech.
Speaking on Wednesday, November 20, 2024, ahead of Ghana’s December 7 general elections, Otumfuo emphasized the importance of peace and national unity, urging political actors to avoid actions or statements that could incite violence.
He made these remarks during a courtesy visit by Kofi Akpaloo, the Presidential Candidate of the Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG), and his party’s leadership. The delegation sought Otumfuo’s blessings and support for the upcoming elections.
The Asantehene stressed Ghana’s democratic maturity and urged all stakeholders to ensure a peaceful and progressive electoral process.
“It appears my children are the ones contesting the elections, and yes, Kofi is one of them. I pray for peace and for him to prevail. Ghana will continue to exist by the grace of God,” Otumfuo said.
He further encouraged patience among candidates, stressing the importance of unity regardless of the election outcome.
Kofi Akpaloo expressed optimism about a peaceful election, citing recent statements by the U.S. Embassy about imposing visa restrictions on individuals attempting to disrupt the process.
Akpaloo urged European counterparts to adopt similar measures to deter electoral violence.
“This election looks to be very peaceful. The American ambassador assured me that European counterparts and the British High Commission will soon issue similar warnings. When people have nowhere to hide, they will be compelled to do the right thing,” Akpaloo stated.
He also called on the Electoral Commission to ensure a transparent process, pledging his party’s commitment to monitoring results nationwide.
“This country belongs to all of us. If you win, fantastic. If not, you contest again. We must uphold fairness and accountability to avoid grievances,” Akpaloo added.
