Mr Mahama Ayariga, a Former Minister of Youth and Sports has secured an easy win to retain his seat as Member of Parliament for the Bawku Central Constituency in the Upper East.
The Incumbent MP polled 25,350 votes out of the 29,513 valid votes cast to beat two other candidates and to pave the way for a fourth consecutive term in Parliament on the ticket of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
Mr Paul Alale Agobiri, the parliamentary Candidate for the New Patriotic Party polled 3,855 votes while Mr Emmanuel Anaba of the All People’s Congress (APC) had 308 votes.
Mr Ayariga would be making his fifth but fourth consecutive appearance in Parliament during the nineth Parliament.
He first entered Parliament in 2005 after winning the 2004 general elections, however, he failed to make a consecutive appearance when he lost the 2008 elections to the late Adamu Dramani Sakande of the NPP but recaptured the seat again in 2012 and since then, has held the seat till date.
He was the Presidential Spokesperson when the late President John Evans Atta Mills won the 2008 elections.
He was subsequently made the Deputy Minister of Trade and Industry and served as the Minister of Youth and Sports under former President John Dramani Mahama and several appointment committees.
Speaking after being declared winner of the Parliamentary elections by the Electoral Commission in Bawku on Sunday, Mr Ayariga expressed gratitude to the people of Bawku for the trust bestowed on him once again.
“We have voted for peace and development, and we will work to restore total peace in Bawku. Despite our political colours, we are one people”, he said.
He assured his constituents that their development and wellbeing would be prioritised to ensure that there was improvement their lives.
He expressed confidence that former President Mahama would return to the presidency per the results of the general elections gathered by the NDC.
In the Presidential results in the area, former President Mahama polled 26,993 votes to beat Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia of the NPP who polled 13,384 votes out of the 40,803 valid votes cast.
