The Ghana Bar Association (GBA) has lauded the people of Ghana for the successful and largely peaceful conduct of the 2024 Presidential and Parliamentary elections held on December 7, 2024. The Association described the process as a testament to the resilience and maturity of Ghana’s democracy.

In a statement, the Association extended its heartfelt congratulations to the President-Elect, John Dramani Mahama, on his victory.

The GBA also commended all stakeholders, including the Electoral Commission, security agencies, election observers, and polling agents, for their critical roles in ensuring the transparency and integrity of the electoral process.

“The good people of Ghana have overwhelmingly spoken in favor of His Excellency John Dramani Mahama. We are hopeful that the President-Elect will continue to champion the democratic principles that the people of Ghana so deeply cherish,” the statement read.

The GBA also acknowledged the concession by outgoing President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, describing it as a significant step in fostering unity and democracy.

Despite the peaceful nature of the elections, the GBA expressed concern over reports of isolated incidents of violence, including gunshots that resulted in the loss of lives. The Association extended condolences to the families of the victims and called for justice.

“The GBA unreservedly condemns all forms of violence and lawlessness, including the destruction of properties and attempts to take over offices. We urge security and law enforcement agencies to address these cases with urgency,” the statement emphasized.

The GBA appealed to all Ghanaians to maintain the spirit of unity and peaceful coexistence that has been a hallmark of the nation.

“We urge all citizens to guard jealously the unity and tolerance that define us, even as we express differing views and opinions,” the statement said.

The statement concluded with a vision of hope: “May Ghana continue to be the bastion of democracy within Africa and beyond. Long live the Ghana Bar Association. Long live Ghana.”
