The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) has announced the commencement of pre-registration for motor vehicles for the 2025 registration period.

The exercise, which began this December, is part of the Authority’s continued efforts to streamline vehicle registration processes across Ghana.

According to a press release issued by the DVLA, the motor vehicle licensing process will start on Thursday, January 2, 2025, at all operational offices nationwide. Vehicle owners will be issued a Vehicle Registration Smart Card and a Certificate of Title, capturing essential details of the vehicle.

The new registration plates will feature a “-25” suffix to signify the year of registration, in compliance with the Road Traffic Regulations, 2012 (L.I. 2180).

The DVLA outlined a two-stage registration process to simplify the procedure for vehicle owners:

Pre-Registration: Vehicle owners are required to present their vehicles and customs entry documents for inspection and validation at authorized Vehicle Testing Stations and DVLA offices.

Final Registration: Starting January 2, 2025, vehicle owners can make payments, capture biometric details, and collect their registration documents, including license plates and roadworthiness certificates, at their preferred DVLA office.

“The introduction of the Online Vehicle Registration System has made the registration process more efficient and secure. We are committed to ensuring the safety and convenience of our cherished clients,” the release said.

The DVLA emphasized the need for original customs entry and supporting documents, with the Ghana Card being the primary form of identification. Authorized representatives transacting on behalf of vehicle owners must present a Power of Attorney and their National ID for verification.

The Authority also cautioned the public against dealing with unauthorized intermediaries, commonly known as “Goro Boys.” “We urge the public to transact directly with DVLA offices to avoid fraud,” the release stated.

Since the adoption of the Electronic Vehicle Registration system in 2023, the DVLA has successfully registered 175,000 vehicles nationwide.

For further details, the public is encouraged to visit the DVLA website or contact the Customer Service Centre at 0302746760.
