The Minority in Parliament has strongly urged Justice Minister-Designate, Dominic Ayine to ensure that all individuals involved in post-electoral disturbances are thoroughly investigated and held accountable.

This demand was raised during the Parliamentary vetting of President John Dramani Mahama’s ministerial nominees on Monday, January 13.

Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin expressed concerns about the growing threat such disturbances pose to Ghana’s democratic values.

In his opening remarks at the vetting, Afenyo-Markin stressed the need for decisive action in response to the violence following the December 7, 2024, general elections.

He insisted that those found guilty of instigating or participating in such acts must face justice to safeguard the integrity and stability of Ghana’s democracy.

“The disturbing videos circulating show the severe threats these actions pose to our democracy. If confirmed, the Attorney General nominee must ensure thorough investigations and accountability for these violations, as no crime committed in pursuit of political power should go unpunished”, he stated.

Afenyo-Markin’s comments were prompted by media reports and videos depicting violent post-election incidents, including attacks on government facilities.

He also highlighted the importance of a fair and impartial judicial process. He urged Ayine, if confirmed, to prioritise investigations into the disturbances and ensure that perpetrators are prosecuted in accordance with the law, irrespective of their political affiliations.”
