The Secretary General of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), Wamkele Mene, has applauded former President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia for his statesmanship in conceding defeat promptly after the December presidential elections.
Ghana’s democratic credentials, he said, were further strengthened with Dr. Bawumia’s concession less than 24 hours after the presidential elections.
“You have indeed shown that you love your country and its people,” he remarked.
During a visit on Friday, January 17, 2025, Wamkele Mene personally thanked Dr. Bawumia for his unwavering support during his tenure as Vice President of Ghana.
“I am here today to express my sincere gratitude for the support you extended to the AfCFTA Secretariat during your tenure as the Vice President of the Republic,” he stated.
Their discussions centered on the AfCFTA Digital Trade Protocol, with a specific focus on advancing cross-border digital payments, a critical component of boosting intra-African trade.
He encouraged Dr. Bawumia to continue contributing to Ghana’s progress, commending his dedication to national development and his pivotal role in strengthening the AfCFTA.
