Parliamentary Network Africa (PNAfrica) has condemned the chaotic scenes that erupted at the Appointments Committee of Parliament during the vetting of the President’s ministerial nominees on Thursday, January 30, 2025.

PNAfrica, an organization advocating for parliamentary transparency and accountability, described the conduct of Members of Parliament (MPs) as “shameful and dishonorable.”

The organization, In a press release, expressed deep disappointment over the physical altercations and heckling that disrupted the proceedings, calling it a stain on the integrity of Ghana’s legislative body.

“This disgraceful conduct not only brings Parliament into disrepute but also erodes public confidence in the institution’s ability to conduct its affairs with integrity and professionalism,” the statement read.

Eyewitnesses reported heated exchanges between opposing MPs, which escalated into physical confrontations, forcing a temporary suspension of the vetting process. Videos circulating on social media show lawmakers engaging in verbal abuse and shoving matches, a scene reminiscent of previous chaotic episodes in the 8th Parliament.

PNAfrica recalled similar incidents, including the violent altercations during the election of the Speaker in 2021 and subsequent parliamentary sessions. The organization lamented the failure of Parliament to address these recurring issues despite previous petitions.

“We petitioned Parliament to take action to prevent a recurrence, yet nothing was done. Our petition never saw the light of day,” PNAfrica stated.

The advocacy group has called on the Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, to take “swift and decisive action” to hold those responsible accountable and ensure that such misconduct does not happen again.

“With his vast legislative experience, we trust the Speaker to uphold the dignity of Parliament and restore public confidence in the institution,” the statement added.
