The Ashanti Caucus of Members of Parliament from the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has issued a rebuttal to what it describes as “misleading reports” surrounding its recent regional caucus election.
The caucus dismissed allegations of external influence and bias, particularly those linking the election outcome to affiliations with Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia or suggesting unfair treatment of Hon. Nana Ayew Afriyie.
In a statement dated February 24, 2025, and signed by the secretary, Hon. Vincent Ekow Assafuah Esq., the caucus emphasized that the election adhered strictly to democratic principles.
“The election was conducted with fairness, transparency, and independence. There was no external influence, coercion, or favoritism in any form. The outcome was solely a reflection of the independent choices of caucus members, making any allegations of bias entirely baseless,” Assafuah stated.
Reports claiming that Hon. Nana Ayew Afriyie received only eight votes were also debunked as “factually inaccurate” and a deliberate attempt to misinform the public.
The caucus clarified that the actual vote count contradicts these assertions, though the release did not disclose specific figures.
The caucus revealed that Hon. Nana Ayew Afriyie did not even participate in the election.
“It is entirely false to suggest that Hon. Nana Ayew Afriyie was present at the election, campaigned, or solicited votes based on his affiliation with Dr. Bawumia. The reality is that he was not in attendance at the said meeting or election. More importantly, he had formally communicated to the Interim Management Committee ahead of the event that he was not interested in contesting for any leadership position.”
The caucus accused unnamed sources of fabricating claims to stir controversy and urged the public and party supporters to disregard the misinformation.
The caucus also rejected what it said are attempts to distort the facts and create unnecessary controversy and stressed that it remains resolute in upholding the principles of democracy, fairness, and transparency in all its internal processes.
