The Amasaman Circuit Court has granted GHC50,000 bail with two justified sureties to Elizabeth Alonsi, a policewoman who allegedly poured hot water on her colleague.

Justice Enid Marful-Sau, High Court judge with additional responsibility at the Circuit Court, ordered that the sureties provide valid national identity cards.

Alonsi pleaded not guilty to causing harm.

The prosecution was directed to serve her or her counsel with materials necessary for disclosures.

Justice Marful-Sau noted that both the victim and Alonsi lived in the same compound, with the victim upstairs and the accused downstairs.

She ruled that bail should not serve as punishment and exercised discretion, considering Alonsi’s fixed place of abode.

In March 2025, Alonsi allegedly poured hot water on her female colleague during an argument, causing injuries to the victim’s face and back.

The Ghana Police Service has since interdicted her.

Her counsel argued that, as an officer of the law, she was not a flight risk and would not interfere with witnesses or investigations.

He assured the court she would not reoffend if granted bail and had credible individuals to stand as sureties, which would help her prepare her defence.

The prosecution opposed bail, citing safety concerns as both lived in the same house.

It also argued that widespread media coverage could affect her security but noted that her counsel could access her while in custody.
