President John Dramani Mahama has described the Ghana Medical Care Trust Fund (MahamaCares) initiative as a beacon of hope for thousands of Ghanaians battling long-term health conditions.

He said the fund is more than just a healthcare programme—it is a symbol of hope for families across the country.

Speaking at the launch of the initiative on Tuesday, April 29, at the University of Ghana Medical Centre (UGMC), Mr Mahama stated, “Today, April 29, we are launching more than just an initiative. We are launching hope – hope for thousands of Ghanaians living with chronic diseases, hope for families battling the overwhelming cost of care.”

He stressed that the fund represents a vital step towards achieving health equity, noting, “This is hope for a future where the quality of life is not determined by one’s ability to pay for essential treatment.”

President Mahama explained that the Ghana Medical Care Trust Fund is designed to support specialist-level treatment for a range of chronic illnesses, including cancers, diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, chronic kidney failure, and stroke.

He noted that the fund aims to close a major gap in Ghana’s healthcare system, where the cost of advanced treatment often makes it inaccessible to many.

According to Mr Mahama, the initiative underscores his commitment to building a more inclusive healthcare system—one in which no Ghanaian is left behind due to financial hardship.
