The Parliamentary Select Committee on Local Government and Rural Development has pledged its full support to Zoomlion Ghana Limited, reinforcing the critical role the company plays in improving sanitation across the country.

Led by Hon. Queenstar Maame Pokuah Sawyerr, MP for Agona East and Chairperson of the Committee, members of the Committee visited Zoomlion’s Integrated Recycling and Composting Plant (IRECOP) in Ho, Volta Region, to witness the company’s waste management innovations firsthand.

Hon. Sawyerr underscored the importance of sustained government support for sanitation initiatives.

She lamented the frequent policy disruptions that accompany changes in political administrations, stating, “Programs initiated in 2016 are often abandoned by 2020, and again shifted in 2024 and 2025. This inconsistency hampers national progress.”

She emphasized the need for continuity, irrespective of which government is in power, to enable private sector players like Zoomlion to deliver on their mandates.

“We need continuation—regardless of the political administration. That is the only way the private sector can thrive and truly serve Mother Ghana,” she stated.

The Committee acknowledged the financial challenges Zoomlion is currently facing, particularly the delay in payment of arrears, and pledged to engage the relevant authorities to address the issue.

“We will speak to the current government to reconsider its stance based on what we’ve seen today. We cannot repeat the same mistakes of the past,” Hon. Sawyerr said.

She commended Zoomlion for its significant contributions to sanitation and environmental sustainability.

“We are impressed. Of course, there are challenges, and we’ve shared them. But we’re confident that together, we can find workable solutions,” she added.

The Committee reaffirmed its commitment to fostering stronger collaboration between the government and the private sector, especially Zoomlion, to ensure long-term and impactful sanitation management in Ghana.

Sophia Kudjordji, Chief Corporate Communications Officer of the Jospong Group, explained that the visit aimed to provide the Committee with an up-close understanding of Zoomlion’s operations and investments.

“We wanted them to see the scale and innovation in our work, especially to inform parliamentary discussions on sanitation,” she said.

She revealed that the Parliamentary Committee was particularly impressed with the presence of a medical waste treatment plant in the region—an infrastructure many were unaware existed.

Kudjordji also stressed Zoomlion’s role in job creation and community development, noting that 80% of staff at the Ho facility are locals, stressing that this is not just about sanitation but about empowering communities through employment and skills development.

The Committee’s visit and strong endorsement signal a renewed push for sustained investment and policy support to enhance sanitation services and build a cleaner, healthier country.
