Managing Director of Intercity STC Coaches Limited, Nana Akomea, has stated the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) has a good chance of breaking the ‘eight’ in 2024 by pairing Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen for the presidential slot.
According to him, for the first time in the history of the party, there are two strong competitors from the north and south divide that satisfy the criteria to lead the party.
He noted these strong aspirants are also the frontliners in the flagbearership race hence a perfect opportunity to pitch them together to contest the next presidential election.
That, he said, is a truly winning team he would back strongly subject to negotiation from the two camps to decide who becomes flagbearer and who becomes running mate.
Speaking on Good Morning Ghana about the NPP flagbearership race, Mr. Akomea argued the ruling party is in a stronger potion today.
According to him, in 2008 even though Vice President Aliu Mahama was a contender, he was not a front runner in the flagbearer contest.
“But today you have the two main frontliners also satisfying the north-south group.”
“What I would strongly like to see and will be very much happy to be part of that process is to have an engagement with the two main people so we can have a single ticket featuring those two; negotiate, look at concessions and offers that can be made and have a single ticket,” he said.
Mr. Akomea stated if the party, after the conference, sets its mind on this proposal then the NPP is most likely to avoid a nasty flagbearer contest whether next year or 2024.
According to him, this flagbearer contest is like any other election that brings division because the two camps will speak against each other because they are challenging for the same thing.
Nobody, he said, is going to say the person he is contesting is a nice guy, “So elections necessarily bring division,” he added.
The former MP argued beyond the division, the contest also cost the contenders huge sums of money that run into billions of cedis.
He said, “Flagbearership race, whether NPP or NDC, massive political parties, is not going to cost less than a billion cedis running around all the 275 constituencies and speaking to thousands of delegates at each constituency over and over and providing T-shirts, transport and other logistics. This is a major undertaking and very costly.”
Mr. Akomea argued if the NPP could have a process that will avoid this the better, especially since the two frontliners also struggle in the north-south divide.
He urged the NPP to avert its mind to this and have a quiet consultative process to have a single ticket combining the two frontliners.
