Member of Parliament for Odododiodioo, Edwin Nii Lantey Vanderpuye, has stated that attempt by the Akufo-Addo administration to introduce the Electronic Transaction Levy (E-levy) is a lazy and damaging approach to generating revenue.

According to him, it is important for every government to seek new avenues for raising funds in order to stabilize the economy and ultimately provide for the wellbeing of its people.

“But using a lazy and damaging approach sickening and shameful,” he stated.

The former Youth and Sports Minister in a social media post noted the Minority’s resistance to the E-levy is premised on the need to safeguard the little income of the impoverished Ghanaian.

He said, “This government in the last five years borrowed a whooping sum of over GH¢220 billion and yet has nothing to show. And also, according to the 2020 Auditor-General’s report, a total amount of ¢12.85 billion irregularities equivalent of $918.28 million was committed by public boards, corporations and other statutory institutions.”

“This is a clear indication of the Akufo-Addo/Bawumia government’s incompetence and lack of leadership.”

“This money could have created permanent jobs, constructed roads and cushioned the ailing economy instead of introducing the killer tax (E-levy).”

The position of the minority in resisting the killer tax (E-levy), is our way of safeguarding the poor man’s little income, the innocent student’s school fees, the market woman’s small capital and the vulnerable pensioner’s money for drugs and food.

This is a clear indication of the Akuffo Addo/Bawumia government’s incompetence and lack of leadership, this money could have created permanent jobs, constructed roads and cushioned the ailing economy instead of introducing the killer tax (E-levy).

It is important for every government to generate and seek enough funding in order to stabilize the economy and ultimately provide for the well being of its people, “But” using a lazy and damaging approach is sickening and shameful.
