WHO IS THE LORD?

Scripture Reading: Exodus 5

And Pharaoh said, “Who is the Lord, that I should obey His voice to let Israel go? I do not know the Lord, nor will I let Israel go.” Exodus 5:2

The king of Egypt had not heard the name of the Lord. That is understandable because this was the first time that the name of the Lord was being publicly proclaimed. The name was first revealed by the Lord to Moses near Mount Horeb.

Who is the Lord? He is the I AM. He is the Eternal One who has always been – He who is, was, and will be. He is the Creator of the Universe – the uncreated One who created all things. He is the giver and sustainer of life.

When Pharaoh asked, ‘who is the Lord’, he did not ask respectfully. He asked disdainfully. The Egyptians considered their Pharaoh to be a god. They could not fathom why their king had to obey a strange god that neither Pharaoh nor the Egyptians knew.

Furthermore, what right did this new god have to call the Israelites “My people” when the Jews were the slaves of Pharaoh? If Pharaoh obeyed the command of the Lord, he would be acknowledging a deity greater than himself. He would then be obliged to free the Hebrews.

Pharaoh extended his disrespect for the Hebrews to their God. Because the king had enslaved the people, he assumed that he was higher than any god they worshipped.

Many times, people in high places have no regard for God because they have no regard for His people. Because of the influence they have and the authority they command, pride enters their hearts, and it translates into dishonour for God and the people who worship Him.

Whether people acknowledge Him or not, the Lord is who He is. He needs no endorsement to be God. In the end, Pharaoh got to know who God is, by the display of His might and power in Egypt.

Has someone questioned your faith and confidence in God? May He reveal Himself to anyone who questions your trust in Him and bring them also to faith and belief in Him.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, I know who You are. You are greater than the greatest; higher than the highest. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
