Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin has reserved special praise for some members of the House for their conscious efforts in promoting the Ghanaian culture through their dressing.

The sense of dressing of these members has caught the attention of the Speaker who has, since the beginning of the year, kept faith strictly with traditional attire as part of his resolve to change the dress code of the House

The members include Minister for Local Government, Dan Botwe, Minority Chief Whip, Alhaji Muntaka Mubarak and Assin Central MP, Ken Agyapong.

Speaker Alban Bagbin had described the cloak worn by speakers as aristocratic and explained he would only wear it for ceremonial purposes.

Speaking in an interview on GTV on Tuesday, February 15, 2022, the Speaker stressed the need to wear made-in Ghana clothing to deliberately market the Ghanaian culture and has since been speaking about the need to promote traditional wear in the house and encouraging MPs to wear traditional wear for sittings

He said, “You may be seeing me more in traditional dresses. I may use that [the cloak] only for ceremonial occasions, which is what is in the literature of Ghana concerning that cloak and gown.”

“Honourable Dan Botwe is my subject from birth and so he’s taken over from me and he is always traditional, simply dressed, very humble and down to earth. I know the MP for Asawase, Mohammed Muntaka. When I met him he was then with the cocoa industry, you know as a young man, it took me time to convince him to come to this Parliament. He is here today as a Chief Whip and he has performed his work very well. He is known to be a committed Muslim and he dresses as such,” the Speaker said.

He also praised Mr Agyapong as one of the few who also promotes traditional wear and commended him for being outspoken.

“Whether you like Kennedy Agyapong or not, he is Kennedy Agyapong. Everybody knows who Kennedy Agyapong is and he has a character. You can disagree with him but that is him and he speaks his mind,” he added.
