LIVING WORD DEVOTIONAL

By Pastor Mensa Otabil

Tuesday 8th March 2022

I AM THE LORD

Scripture Reading: l Exodus 6

And God spoke to Moses and said to him: “I am the Lord. I appeared to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, as God Almighty, but by My name Lord I was not known to them. Exodus 6:2–3

When Moses told Pharaoh that the God of the Hebrews had sent him, Pharaoh asked, ‘who is the Lord’? It is most likely that when Moses was in prayer before God, he brought this question Pharaoh asked up.

This was God’s answer to Pharaoh, ‘I AM the Lord’! That was all God had to say, ‘I AM’. His name reveals who He is.

·He is Pharaoh’s Lord. Both the Egyptians and the Israelites saw Pharaoh as their lord. He owned them and ruled over them. Now, God was saying, ‘Pharaoh is not the lord, I AM’. He was stating that He, and not Pharaoh, owned the Israelites and the Egyptians, including Pharaoh himself.

·He is Lord over Egypt’s gods The Egyptians had ‘spiritual lords’ over all aspects of their lives. They had gods over their rivers, farms and families. God was saying to Moses, ‘the gods are not lords, I AM’. God has no equal. He has no competition – neither physical nor spiritual. He was establishing that He is Lord over all lords.

· He is Lord over His promises. God does not need any help to do what He wants to do. He is the same God who revealed Himself in the past to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. To the patriarchs of Israel, the Lord revealed Himself as the All-Sufficient One. In that moment in time, He had shown up to redeem His promises.

God offered Himself as the guarantee for His word. His proclamation, ‘I AM the Lord’, was an all-embodying reminder that He is the Lord over all. Moses could go before Pharaoh and declare it and it would be sufficient.

The LORD is the one who is always there. He is our strength for today and the guarantee for our future. Everything He does is consistent with His nature.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, you are the unchanging one. Through all the changing seasons of my life, you remain the same. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
