The Minority in Parliament has called on President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and the Minister for Health to take urgent steps for the reopening of Ghana’s land borders.
According to the Minority, there can be no justification for the continued closure of Ghana’s land borders, which have been closed since 2020 after the COVID pandemic hit Ghana.
The government, the side insists, should take whatever proactive measures it needs to take to allow for the free flow of persons and goods across ECOWAS and the rest of the world.
Minority leader Haruna Iddrisu who made the call stated that post-COVID, Ghana may not be out of danger yet but there is a need to return the country to normalcy with the movement of goods and services through the borders.
Speaking to the media in Parliament on Tuesday 15th March, 2022, Hon. Haruna Iddrisu urged President Akufo-Addo, as Chairperson of ECOWAS to do the needful to give meaning to the Resolutions he chaired for ECOWAS to pass to allow and facilitate the free movement of goods and services between neighbouring states and the rest of the word.
President Nana Akufo-Addo first announced the closure of the country’s land borders as of Sunday, March 22, for a period of two weeks as part of measures to limit the spread of the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak in the country.
Since then, many of the measures that were introduced including the closure of the Kotoka International Airport have been rescinded over time but the land borders continue to be closed with its attendant challenges.
