The Deputy Minister for Trade and Industry in charge of International Trade, Hon. Herbert Krapa has called for institutional collaboration for a successful implementation of the National Export Development Strategy.

According to the Deputy Minister, “a strong collaboration between the Ministry of Trade and Industry, the Ghana Export Promotion Authority, Ghana Standards Authority, Food and Drugs Authority, the private sector and all other relevant trade institutions is needed for Ghana to realize the objects of the Export Development Strategy.”

The National Export Development Strategy is one of the core components of President Akufo-Addo’s industrial transformation agenda which is envisaged to increase Ghana’s exports and bring its non-traditional export revenue to 25 billion United States Dollars by 2029.

Hon. Krapa observed that a collaborative effort between all players and institutions within the export trade value chain was key to building synergies with the government’s flagship programmes such as the One District One Factory initiative and Planting for Export and Rural Development in actualizing the Export Development Strategy.

“By working together with the common goal of increasing our exports by significant volumes, products from companies operating under these programmes will become competitive and marketable for both the regional and global export market,” he explained.

“Global trade is facilitated by exports, and it bears directly on a country’s economic outlook. It is a verifiable stimulus for integrated industrialization and with it: more jobs for our young people, knowledge and skills transfer and an improvement in the standard of living of our people. This can only be achieved when we work together,” he stressed.

In an address at a Stakeholder Consultative Forum on Export Trade and Guarantee Facilities organized by the Ghana Export-Import Bank in Accra on Tuesday under the theme “Facilitating International Trade; The Role of Ghana Exim Bank”, Hon. Krapa reiterated the need for all hands to be on deck for the country’s Export Development Strategy.

He expressed his appreciation to the Ghana Exim Bank for providing the platform for consultations with stakeholders, empowering Ghanaian exporters to increase the country’s exports and being a reliable financial partner for players in the export industry over the years.

The Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Exim Bank, Mr. Lawrence Agyinsam mentioned that the Bank has provided various forms of assistance to exporters in the area of pharmaceuticals, shea butter, cashew, potato, poultry, cassava, oil palm, mango, bee production and pineapple farming since its establishment in 2016.

He assured the gathering that the Bank’s products which include the Export Trade Facility, the Receivable Discounting Facility and the Provisional Guarantee Facility, will continue to enhance the capacity of exporters to increase Ghana’s representation in trade on the international market.

Among the persons present at the Forum were the Coordinator of the National AfCFTA Office, Dr. Fareed Arthur, the Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Free Zones Authority, Mr. Mike Oquaye, the Board of the Ghana Exim Bank and representatives of associations in the export industry.
