Former President Mahama has called on the Akufo-Addo led government to take immediate steps to reopen Ghana’s land borders.

According to him, there can be no justification for the continued closure of the borders which has devastated the economy of border communities.

President Akufo-Addo first announced the closure of the country’s land, sea and air borders as part of measures to limit the spread of the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak in the country with the exception of cargo.

Since then, several of those restrictions have been eased including the closure of the Kotoka International Airport as well as the sea borders.

But the land borders continue to be closed with its attendant challenges culminating in residents of Elubo and Aflao demanding the reopening of the entry points so they can engage in commercial activities since the closure has affected their livelihoods.

Taking to his social media handle, the former President said “the long border closures have devastated the economy of our border communities.”

He also added that the “government’s announcement that it is deliberating at Cabinet about a possible opening of our land borders is long overdue. Let’s open the land borders now!”
