The Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) has indicated that the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) must dump former President John Dramani Mahama if the party wants to win the 2024 presidential elections.
According to the Unit, the NDC has a higher probability to secure victory in the next general elections but claims this victory is based on one condition – change Mahama.
In a five-year forecast on Ghana released on April 13, 2022, the EIU indicated that its assessment shows the NDC will need to jettison its 2016 and 2020 flagbearer to be assured of victory in the next general election.
The EIU has, in the past, rightly predicted correctly the outcomes of Ghana’s elections in 2008, 2012, 2016 and 2020.
Former President John Mahama unsuccessfully led the NDC into the election campaigns in 2016 and 2020.
President Akufo-Addo concludes his final term in 2024, and the opposition is expected to face off with whoever the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) will put forward as its new leader.
However, in the wake of numerous challenges plaguing the government including unemployment, an economic downturn, and corruption among others, the EIU believes these developments will fuel citizens’ sentiments against the ruling NPP administration.
It indicated that the baseline forecast is that ongoing public dissatisfaction with the slow pace of improvements in governance—such as infrastructure development, job creation and easing of corruption—will trigger anti-incumbency factors and push the electorate to seek a change.
This situation, the EIU said, will tilt the balance in the NDC’s favour but the London-based firm said the NDC must first revitalise its prospects with a fresh candidate rather than stick with Mahama again.
