Former president of Ghana John Dramani Mahama says he knew he could lose the 2016 election.
He says going into the election, he prepared two speeches, one for victory and one as a concession speech.
“You can win and you can lose. When you go into an election you should be prepared for both and so when I went into that election, I prepared two speeches, one was a concession speech and one was a victory speech. Unfortunately, I had to use the concession speech in 2016.”
On whether losing elections in 2016 was painful, the former President said “you serve your country at the pleasure of the people, and based on their own assessment they think that somebody should take over…”.
He continued “we have a new genre in our political space that is not really just about your track record and what you did. If you ask Ghanaians today to make an assessment of the four years I was in office they will tell you I did a lot of transformation in the country, especially in terms of infrastructure.
But somebody comes to use the social media space and says he can do better than he did and I will transform the country in eighteen months with a lot of sweet talks, they vote you out. What you do is you give it out”.
