GIVE US OUR DAILY BREAD

Scripture Reading: Matthew 6

Give us this day our daily bread. Matthew 6:11

Asking God for bread is what most of us focus our prayer on; what we need for each day.

• What is Bread? Bread represents the basic necessities of life. It is the symbol of all that is necessary for survival and for a full life.

There is much meaning in this simple request. Let’s break it down a bit.

• Give us, our bread: The words ‘our’ and ‘us’ overcome selfishness and show concern for others. In praying for our needs, we must also be mindful of others. The Lord wants us to think beyond our needs – we must think of others.

• This day: This request seeks for something in the present. It does not seek to deal with what we needed in the past or what we will need in the future. It eliminates worry and anxiety about the distant future. It also helps us to trust God on a day-by-day basis.

• Our daily bread: God has made provision for a daily portion for each of us. Each day He offers us new mercies and opportunities. We must ask for what the Lord has for us and not covet what others have. We do not ask for someone else’s bread but for our own.

We ask for what is necessary for us, not the excesses of this world. We confess our inadequacy in ourselves and affirm our dependency upon God. This teaches the believer to come to God daily in prayer and trust Him to meet our needs.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, thank you for my daily portion. I receive every mercy, wisdom, and opportunity you offer me today. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
