CAF Champions League: NSA confident Baba Yara Stadium will be ready for Kotoko’s campaign

The National Sports Authority’s Ashanti Regional Director, Kojo Appiah, has stated that efforts are being made to have the stadium ready by the end of August so that Asante Kotoko can use it for their CAF Champions League campaign.

The stadium is currently not approved to host international matches by the Confederation of African Football.

CAF granted the stadium a one-match approval in March to host the Ghana-Nigeria World Cup playoff first leg, but requested that authorities improve the stadium’s standard before it could be fully accepted as a Category A venue.

The work is still not finished, and there are reports that Kotoko will have to play their Champions League games in Cape Coast.

“It’s surprising to hear that Baba Yara Sports Stadium cannot host Kotoko’s African campaign because such information would have been communicated first to the NSA or GFA. We are currently working consistently on meeting CAF requirements. By the end of August, we should be done with it,” Appiah told Akoma Sports.

He urged supporters of the Kumasi-based club to be calm and asked Kotoko to appeal to CAF for an inspection to be conducted on the facility.

Kotoko will begin their campaign in September with a preliminary round tie against Burkinabe champions Rail Club de Kadiogo.
