The Speaker of Ghana’s parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban Kingsford Sumana Bagbin has charged the youth in the country to take a special interest in harnessing their potential in the sports industry.
According to him, though the industry is confronted with some challenges, a lot can be harnessed if the youth are encouraged to take advantage of the various opportunities in the sector.
Rt.Hon. Bagbin was speaking at the Macoy College of education after inspecting ongoing works on a multipurpose astroturf at the school.
He said “A country’s reputation and development are not only based on its economic or population growth but also its popularity.
This popularity is gained through various fields especially sports and games. Sports form an important aspect of life for they play a vital role in bringing about the physical, mental, and social growth of a nation”.
The speaker expressed satisfaction with the quality of work on the project and promised his commitment to ensuring that it is completed on schedule.
Phase one of the multipurpose sports complex at the Macoy college of education which is being executed by Wembley Sports Construction Company Ltd, commenced on the 6th of June 2022.
It comes with a standard 11 aside pitch with a size of 110 meters by 75 meters and a panel mesh fencing with flood lights (GFA Approved) which is about 80% complete.
The first phase also has in it, courts for volleyball, basketball and handball.
It also comes with 500-seater spectator stands as well as public washrooms, offices underneath, changing rooms, and a 20-seater VIP sitting area on top of the spectator stand and is expected to be complete by end of October this year.
Simon Nii Lantei Lamptey, Project Manager of Wembley Sports Construction Company Ltd who led the Rt Speaker during the inspection assure that his outfit will complete the first phase of the project on schedule.
He further disclosed that the second phase which will be the construction of an 8-lane track oval will commence by January next year and end in August 2023.
