The Bono and Ahafo Integrated Recycling and Compost Plants (IRECoP) have conducted successful test runs ahead of the completion of minor civil works and commissioning.

This was disclosed to members of the Parliamentary Press Corps (PPC) who toured these facilities on Thursday 20th October 2022.

The team had also visited the Ho, Dambai, Tamale and Damongo IRECoP sites to access the progress of work and how soon these plants will commence operations.

At the Bono Region IRECoP site located on the outskirt of Sunyani, the site manager, John Oti Ochere disclosed that 20 containers of waste were used to test-run the plant and the exercise went on smoothly.

He indicated that the plant successfully processed the waste and segregated the organic, which was processed into compost from the plastic.

According to him, when the plant comes onstream it will be able to process about 600 to 800 tons of waste a day and create about 100 direct and 500 indirect jobs.

He explained that since the waste in the region is more organic compared to the southern regions where plastic is predominant, the plant will produce more compost that can be transported to other regions for farming activities.

“For the moment, the Bono IRECoP will only process solid waste but the expectation is to add a medical waste unit in the future so we can recycle and process this type of waste too.”

He assured the facility could go into operation by the end of the year if the current rate of work continues.

At the Ahafo IRECoP site at Goaso, the Locations Manager for Zoomlion, Sylvester Williams and the Ahafo Regional Manager Edward Zidah conducted the team around.

They explained that though civil work is still ongoing, the plant has been installed and tested and the outcome has been satisfactory.

They indicated the Ahafo Plant has capacity to process 200 tons of waste when it goes into operation and will be creating about 100 direct jobs and over 400 indirect jobs.

Construction of the IRECOP facilities is a collaboration between the Jospong Group of Companies, Zoomlion Ghana Limited’s parent company in collaboration with the Government of Ghana.

This is part of efforts to ensure the country has a sustainable waste management system to keep the country clean.

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo in his State of the Nation Address in 2021 promised to establish 16 recycling plants and 14 medical waste treatment facilities across the country.
