Trade Minister, Alan Kyerematen has applauded single window system Integrated Customs Management Systems (ICUMS) for transacting business.
According to him, ICUMS was the solution to the biggest challenges being the existence of different service providers’ providing different services in the trade facilitation space.
In his view, the government in 2017 decided to review the trade facilitation regime by bringing ICUMS on board to sanitize the situation.
Speaking during a call on him by a delegation from CUPIA, Mr. Kyerematen noted that ‘It was clear to us that the different service providers working on different electronic platforms did not augur well for efficiency and effectiveness in terms of trade facilitation in Ghana.”
He continued: “As political leaders, public servants, we were convinced that the Unipass system which was rebranded as ICUMS was going to work for us in Ghana so we persevered.”
The Trade Minister explained that the government was convinced the system will improve revenue mobilization and be efficient in terms of trade facilitation in bringing goods in and out of our borders.
“In spite of the challenges, the government achieved exceptional results in the first three months of running of the system that has never been seen in our country. There was the need for a robust but flexible system to respond to the constant changes in the dynamics in the market. And we believe that so far so good” the Minister added.
