The Government of Ghana is constructing a total of 266 bridges, which are at various stages of completion.
Crucial among these bridges are the various bridges captured under the comprehensive bridge programme, under which some 152 bridges have been given out on contract.
They include 50 bridges, which will be constructed under the Czech bridges programme. Under this same programme, 89 Mabey Bailey Bridges will be constructed around the country.
Under the Sinohydro project, government is building 69 steel bridges across the feeder roads network. Additionally, government is constructing five Belgian bridges on the feeder roads network at Suprudo and Kushea in the Central Region, Galo-Sato and Kpando Dafor in the Volta Region and Nsese no. 2 in the Eastern Region. Already, 13 Spanish bridges and four ACROW bridges have been completed across the feeder roads network.
These include the Amponyase junction to Amponyase bridge in the Ashanti Region, the Eremon to Tom bridge and the Bayiri to Jimpisi bridge in the Upper West Region and the Esaman bridge in the Central Region. These four bridges cost a total of GH₵6.9 million.
These include bridges to be built over River Detsebu, River Dayi, River Tsawoea, River Alabo, River Osiem, River Akora, River Birim, River Osene, River Okyi, River Bukam, River Linkale and River Mogli. There’ll also be a rehabilitation of 20 bridges on the trunk roads network.
In the northern sector, government is constructing seven bridges, which include the Kulungugu bridge, the Garu 1 and 2 bridges, the Doninga bridge, the Sisili bridge in the Upper East Region, and the Ambalara and Kulung bridges in the Upper West region.
The Kulung bridge is currently at sub-structure level. Six of these bridges have already been launched and opened to traffic.
Still in the northern sector, government is reconstructing the Buipe and Yapei bridges. In addition, government is constructing a new bridge at Daboya to serve as an alternative route to the regions in the north.
Individual bridges under construction include the Volivo Cable bridge, which is being jointly funded by the Government of Ghana and the Japanese International Cooperation Agency.
Others are the Dikpe, Iture and Ankobra bridges, the Adawso-Ekyeamanfrom bridge in the Afram plains, and one which is being built over the Pra River at Twifo Praso, which is being financed by the GoG.
Under the Ghana Highway Authority, some ongoing bridges are the construction of the steel bridge over the Gyanwali River at Kundugu on the Yala-Kundungu-Sombisi road, the construction of the steel bridge over the Gyanwali River at Kundugu on the Sombisi-Tantali road, the construction of the steel bridge over the Kulpawn River on the Luari-Jadima road, the construction of the steel bridge over the White Volta at Mishuo, and the construction of the steel bridge over the Pra River along the Twifo Praso-Dunkwa road.
