President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has sent heartfelt condolences to the government and people of Turkey and Syria on the earthquake that devastated the region on Monday 6th March.

The magnitude 7.8 quake, which hit before sunrise in bitter winter weather, was the worst to strike Turkey this century.

It was followed in the early afternoon by another large quake of magnitude 7.7.

The quake killed more than 2,200 people and injured thousands more on Monday in Turkey and northwest Syria, flattening apartment blocks and heaping more destruction on Syrian cities already devastated by years of war

In a post on his Facebook wall, President Akufo-Addo prayed for the souls of the dead to rest in perfect peace and extended the prayers of the Ghanaian people to the survivors.

He also prayed for Ghana international Christian Atsu to be found safe and sound.

The former Chelsea and Newcastle winger is trapped under the rubble of a destroyed building after the quake with frantic rescue efforts ongoing.

Two of his team-mates as well as members of the technical staff were said to have been pulled out of the rubble, though Atsu – who scored a dramatic late winner for his club on Sunday – is still missing.
