Convenor of the #FixTheCountry Movement Oliver Mawuse Barker-Vormawor says he will write to the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) on Thursday, March 9 over the “violations” of rights of residents in Ashaiman by some soldiers.

According to him, what the soldiers went to Ashaiman, though said to be sanctioned by the Military High Command, is a threat to Ghana’s democracy.

For him, the supposed arrest of 184 civilians by the military in last Tuesday’s swoop can only be kidnapping.

Therefore, he is going to provide legal representation for each and every resident who fell victim to the military brutalities.

“They claim that this was intelligence-led. No intelligence-led operation will lead you to gather 184 citizens at random and release 150 of them. On what basis were those detained to begin with?” the lawyer questioned.

“They are continuing to hold 34 citizens still. I am going to urge them that if they have any respect for the remnant of this democracy, if they have any respect for themselves, even if the Commander-in-Chief refuses to act, that they release those individuals promptly.

“Myself, we are going to write to them because we have taken up the charge and course to provide legal representations to all the victims involved.”

Mr Barker-Vormawor was speaking on TV3‘s Ghana Tonight on Wednesday, March 8.

His reaction comes a day after the Military High Command sanctioned an intelligence-led operation to fish out persons behind the gruesome murder of a 21-year-old military officer.

Imoro Sherrif was stabbed to death in the early hours of Saturday, March 4.

Mr Barker-Vormawor, whose treason trial was heard in an Ashaiman court, said volunteers will be deployed to the town from Thursday through Saturday to gather information in preparing a legal action against the military just like they did in the case of Ejura in 2021.

“We are going to make every attempt to sue the Ghana Armed Forces for what they have done.”
