Mr. Boye Laryea, the Municipal Chief Executive of Okaikwei North Municipal Assembly (ONMA) says the Assembly is set to change the narrative where domestic pipe lines supplying water for households is laid through gutters in the Municipality.

Describing the situation as alarming and a fertile ground for the outbreak of disease like cholera and typhoid, the MCE said the phenomena must change to save the lives of the many unsuspecting families.

He stated that since his assumption of office as MCE, sanitation has been his top most priority for the municipality and that “it is time for us to take stock and assess our progress so far”.

Speaking to journalists after a four-hour Municipality-wide clean-up exercise in Accra on Saturday, Mr. Laryea stated that the problem persists because spaces allocated for laying of these domestic pipe lines have been occupied by metal containers and kiosks.

“It’s a very important issue, I have contacted the Ghana Water Company for a discussion on Wednesday, I am alarmed, the pipelines of the water we drink is laid rough the gutter?, it’s a recipe for cholera and typhoid disease” he noted assuring that “We are going to look at the best way to correct this, we will take it as a project and deal with this matter.”

Mr. Laryea disclosed that the company has complained about where to lay the pipes because people have put metal containers and kiosks at places the pipes should be laid, we know what to do, we will remove those containers if need be.”

He continued: “Three years on, the municipality has done its best; we can’t say we have done hundred per cent but I know we are on course. We have to rather continue and sustain our gains.”

The exercise is part of an elaborate plan to rid the municipality of filth as the Assembly climaxes programmes and activities marking its third anniversary since its establishment.

Under the theme: “Partnering the Community For A Clean And Green ONMA”, the cleanup exercise was held simultaneously in all eleven Electoral Areas in the municipality with support from some residents in the community.

At Abeka, Blemagor, Achimota and Akweteyman, all suburbs in the Municipality, the respective Assemblymen and their teams were spotted busily desilting the gutters with staff from Professional City Waste Managers, Metropolitan Waste Management Limited and Zoomlion compact trucks on site clearing the refuse.

Mr. Laryea is also expected to commission an ICT Centre at Fadama today July 26, 2021 and organize a picture exhibition and documentary show to tell the success story of the Assembly.
