Dr Clement Apaak, the Builsa South Member of Parliament has criticized the Akufo-Addo government for failing to supply textbooks to schools.

Dr Apaak said this is wrong because it affects the quality of teaching and learning in the various schools.

The Builsa South Member of Parliament comments come after the state-owned Daily Graphic reported that some Municipal and District Directors of Education and head teachers of some basic schools in the Central Region had made a passionate appeal to the Ghana Education Service (GES) to ensure the supply of the full complement of textbooks to basic schools.

In the view of the Heads of the Schools, this shortfall in the supply of textbooks, particularly for English Language, Core Mathematics and Science, is negatively affecting teaching and learning.

Although the the Minister of Education, Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum assured that “We have procured enough textbooks for all subjects to go round all the schools. What is left is for the Regional Stores to ensure that every school with a shortfall receives the extra textbooks they need,” Dr Apaak said in a tweet that the government must be called out for this development.

“Why must heads cry for textbooks 4yrs after the introduction of a new curriculum? The heads are also grappling with lack of capitation grants for 6 terms as well as an acute furniture deficit. The Akufo-Addo/Bawumia gov’t must be called out for neglecting public basic education,” the Ranking member on the Committee of Education in Parliament said.
