The national communications team member of the opposition National Democratic Congress, Gabriella Tetteh, has rubbished the call on the youth to demonstrate against the 10% tax slapped on betting.

In a panel discussion on TV3’s Newday show on Thursday, August 17, 2023, Gabriella emphasized that the 10% tax placed on betting winnings is a step in the right direction, stating that apart from the moral aspect of it, many of those who engage in it are gainfully employed Ghanaians including men and women in uniform, bankers and other professionals.

“The 10% taxation on betting winnings is in order. I do not see anything wrong with it. Proceeds from it can be used to help in the development paradigm of the country. I see nothing wrong with it” she stated.

Nana Yaa Jantuah, the CPP representative on the show, was in total agreement with the government on the tax placed on betting winnings and even called for it to be increased further.

It could be recalled that upon the commencement of the 10% tax on betting, the National Youth Organizer of the NDC, George Opare-Addo, issued a statement condemning the government.

In the release, Pablo, as he is popularly referred to, did not only bare his teeth to the government but also outlined the series of actions his outfit has put in place to force the government to cancel the taxation.

Pablo indicated that he and his youth wing and a section of the Ghanaian youth would undertake the following exercises to ensure that the 10% tax is abolished;

  1. Picket at the Finance Ministry and occupy government offices across the country.

  2. Engage in conventional and unconventional agitations across the country.

  3. Instigate the youth to confront the officials of this government.

  4. Occupy Parliament and other government’s agencies.

All these, according to Pablo, are lined up to compel the government to abolish the 10% tax on betting winnings.

Gabriella Tetteh, the NDC communicator, vehemently disagrees with Pablo and his group since the tax is in order, as she emphasized.
