The Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) has endorsed calls for President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to declare a state of emergency. This comes as measures are being taken to provide relief for people affected by the spillage of the Akosombo and Kpong Dams.

A rescue team, made up of the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO), Ghana Armed Forces, and other relief agencies, is working tirelessly to rescue people stranded and affected by rising floodwaters from the dams’ spillage, which started on September 15, 2023.

“The Ghana National Association of Teachers, GNAT, wholly supports the call for a state of emergency to be declared in the affected areas. The current natural disaster is posing a significant threat not only to the existence of the people but also depriving the communities of the essentials of life,” a statement from GNAT read.

“The declaration of an emergency is critical to secure public safety, maintain public order, and guarantee the supply of essential goods and services required by the communities,” the group added in its statement.

GNAT has also urged teachers in the affected areas to remain calm and resolute. The group has pledged to ensure that affected students are not left out of their education, emphasizing the need to act fast to mitigate the impact of the disaster.
