A theologian, Rev. John Avorgah, emphasized that the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) should not assume that constructing a National Cathedral would guarantee victory in the 2024 general election.

Speaking on Starr Today with Joshua Kodjo Mensah on October 18, 2023, the theologian conveyed a strong message: “Christians will not vote for any government simply because they build a Cathedral. Whether the Cathedral is built or not, good governance speaks for itself. Building a Cathedral will not influence Christians’ decisions in 2024.”

The controversy surrounding the National Cathedral escalated with the resignation of Archbishop Nicholas Duncan Williams and Rev. Eastwood Anaba from the board of trustees.

Their decision, outlined in an October 12, 2023 letter to the President, stemmed from concerns about an unaddressed call for an audit into the project since January 2023.

They lamented the silence, stating it contradicted their principles.

In response, the National Cathedral Secretariat vehemently contested these claims.

Executive Director Dr. Paul Opoku-Mensah clarified, “Deloitte was officially commissioned for the audit on March 27, 2023, and began its work on May 17, 2023. The audit process has been ongoing, and updates were consistently shared with the Board through various channels.”

Dr. Opoku-Mensah reiterated, “Archbishop Duncan Williams and Rev. Eastwood Anaba were provided with all relevant documents, including the Executive Director’s report, even when they were absent from the June and September 2023 meetings. The assertion that they were kept in the dark about the audit process is incorrect.”

Rev. Avorgah’s perspective highlighted the shifting sentiments among Christians, emphasizing the importance of genuine governance over symbolic gestures.
