Members of the Minority Caucus in Parliament have set a December 18 ultimatum for the Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Ernest Addison, to be present at the central bank’s facility to receive the petition calling for his resignation.

The Caucus alleges a litany of grievances, including economic mismanagement that has reportedly pushed over one million Ghanaians into extreme poverty.

In an official letter addressed to Governor Addison, Minority Leader Cassiel Ato Forson reiterated the call for the Governor’s resignation.

The Minority Caucus emphasized the urgency of a change in leadership to kickstart a financial sector restructuring.

The Caucus, supported by civil society groups and numerous Ghanaians protested on October 3, 2023, outside the Bank of Ghana’s head office.

During the protest, members demanded not only the resignation of Governor Addison but also his two Deputy Governors and the entire board of the central bank.

Among the allegations, the Caucus accuse the central bank’s leadership of failing in crucial areas such as managing inflation and preventing the depreciation of the Ghana Cedi.

They further assert that the Governor oversaw the collapse of the country’s financial sector, resulting in substantial losses for banks and unfavourable interest rates detrimental to business growth.

The official letter specifies the reasons for their demand, citing issues ranging from significant financial losses to the alleged illegal printing of currency and the depletion of external reserves.
