The New Patriotic Party Member of Parliament for the Ayawaso West Wuogon Constituency in the Greater Accra Region, Lydia Seyram Alhassan, has said although she was sure of victory, “she won’t be complacent.”

Hon Lydia Seyram Alhassan who is also the First Deputy Majority Chief Whip stressed “Let’s do away with bickering and backbiting to enable us to break the eight.

The MP, who is also the First Deputy Majority Chief Whip in Parliament, announced this last Friday following her acclamation and endorsement by the NPP delegates to represent the party unopposed.

She told party supporters. “Breaking the eight is possible and I promise I will not let the party down,”

Moments after the acclamation, Ms Alhassan zoomed into action by calling on the youth to be “her backbone” to retain the seat.

In order to have the buy-in of the youth to retain power, therefore, the MP has introduced a number of youth empowerment programmes to reduce unemployment and create wealth for all.

The programmes include skills training, supporting individuals in practical educational programmes and engaging a number in her self-sponsoring constituency projects, including roads.

She faces off with John Dumelo of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in what is expected to be a two-horse race.

In the 2020 general election, the incumbent NPP MP, Ms Alhassan, won with 39,851 votes, representing 51.36 per cent, while her closest contender, Mr Dumelo of the NDC, polled 37,478 votes, representing 48.30 per cent.

Meanwhile the Majority Leader and Leader of Government Business in Parliament, has congratulated all elected parliamentary candidates in the Saturday, January 27, parliamentary primaries of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

In a statement, Mr Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu said the elections had produced a mixed grill of “still maintain” and new faces.

“To all who participated in the contest, my sincere appreciation. Congratulations to the winners. To the non-winners, cheer up for a better tomorrow,” he said.

“It was a family contest. However, as the case is in any such contest, some unsavoury statements might have been made. Let the contestants, especially, the winners, stretch out their hands and reach out to each other as soon as practicable to reach out to heal wounds and bruises.”

He reiterated that collectively they had a charge to keep, to “break the 8”.

He noted that no party person must be left behind in confronting their principal opponent in the December 2024 Presidential and General elections; saying “with God on our side we shall overcome.”
