Rita Naa Odoley Sowah, the Member of Parliament for the Dade Kotopon constituency, has stressed the crucial role of women and girls in the scientific arena to mark the International Day of Women and Girls in Science.
The day, dedicated to acknowledging and promoting the participation of women and girls in science, saw MP Sowah advocating for greater gender equality and empowerment within the field.
In a statement delivered on the floor of Parliament, the MP emphasized the need for an inclusive and sustainable future where diversity is celebrated and innovation is championed.
“This day represents a pivotal moment for us to recognize and empower the invaluable contributions of women and girls in science,” Naa Odoley Sowah stated, underscoring the 2024 theme, “Women and Girls in Science Leadership – a New Era for Sustainability.”
She cited the exemplary achievements of Ghanaian scientists such as Prof. Elsie Effah Kaufmann and Prof. Nana Ama Browne Klutse, portraying them as beacons of leadership and innovation.
However, she also addressed the systemic barriers that women and girls face in accessing education and leadership opportunities in science, ranging from gender stereotypes to cultural biases and institutional constraints.
“The stark contrast in participation between boys and girls in science classes and events serves as a disheartening reminder of the challenges we face,” she remarked, calling on her fellow legislators to invest in STEM education and promote gender equality in scientific decision-making processes.
The Dadekotopon legislator celebrated the achievements of young women from her constituency who are making strides in the field of science, particularly medical students Zacharia-Sidique Rahma and Mensah Selassie Isabella from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology.
“Their dedication and pursuit of excellence are inspirational to all of us,” she said, extending her best wishes for their continued success.
She added, “Let us reaffirm our commitment to empowering women and girls in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Together, we can usher in a new era for sustainability where women and girls lead in scientific innovation.”
