Female Members of Parliament of the Minority group have risen in strong condemnation of the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) following attacks on the person of Professor Jane Naana Opoku Agyeman, the Vice Presidential candidate of the party.
The political climate was heated when Chairman Wontumi made derogatory remarks against the good professor sparking outrage and demand for higher standards of political discourse from various quarters of society.
The NDC women’s caucus described Wontumi’s latest attack on the party’s running mate as unacceptable and disgraceful.
“Such behaviour undermines the integrity of political discourse and reflects poorly on both Chairman Wontumi and the NP),” a statement signed by Comfort Doyoe Cudjoe, Deputy Minority Whip said.
The caucus challenged the NPP and its leadership to redirect their focus towards addressing pressing national issues.
“Instead of engaging in petty insults, Bernard Antwi-Boasiako and the NPP should rather prioritize addressing the collapsing economy and delivering on their promises to the Ghanaian people.”
“It is time for chairman Wontumi, the NPP, and the government to redirect their efforts towards constructive actions that benefit all Ghanaians rather than resorting to divisive rhetoric,” the statement said and stressed that Ghanaians deserve leaders who uphold dignity and focus on meaningful progress for the nation.
The female Minority MPs also pointed out the recurring nature of these attacks, referencing a similar incident from July 10, 2020, by the same individual.
The MPs demanded a public apology from Chairman Wontumi to Professor Jane Naana Opoku Agyemang and all women in Ghana, threatening to ‘advise themselves’ should their demand not be met.
“We are committed to promoting a culture of respect, dignity, and equality for all individuals, regardless of their gender, background, or ethnic affiliation,” the statement concluded, calling for unity in denouncing such reprehensible behaviour and demanding accountability from those who perpetrate it.
