Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, has issued a warning that recent events in Kenya should serve as a wake-up call to the government, particularly as the country gears up for a crucial election on December 7.

He emphasized that the situation in Kenya bears similarities to Ghana’s, urging the government including Members of Parliament, to ensure free, fair, and transparent elections.

He stressed the importance of not taking things for granted.

“The situation in Kenya is not too different from ours. We must take preemptive measures to safeguard Ghana’s democracy ahead of the 2024 elections.”

“We must do all we can to ensure that the right person that Ghanaians want to lead the country, leads the country,” he stated.

Addressing journalists in Kumasi during the weekend, Speaker Alban Bagbin revealed that he has reached out to key stakeholders, including the chairpersons of the Electoral Commission and the National Commission for Civic Education, traditional authorities, and the Chief Justice.

He revealed plans to engage with President Akufo-Addo to ensure a violent-free electoral process.

“People sometimes take so many things for granted, including my colleagues in Parliament.”

“We all can bear witness that what happened in Kenya could happen in Ghana if we are not careful. We must do all we can to prevent that,” the Speaker remarked.

He assured that his efforts are non-partisan, emphasizing his commitment to ensuring that the upcoming elections are conducted peacefully and fairly.

“We are not different from our brothers and sisters in Kenya. I will do all I can to ensure that nobody sees partisanship in my actions,” he stressed.
