The Abossey Okai Spare Parts Dealers Association has publicly endorsed Dr. Mahamadu Bawumia’s innovative proposal to introduce a flat rate tax on the importation of spare parts.
This move by the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) presidential candidate is considered a game-changer for the spare parts industry in Ghana.
In a statement, the Association praised the initiative, indicating it will protect the interests of spare parts dealers across the nation.
“We are in full support of Dr. Bawumia’s proposal. It’s a visionary step that promises to fortify our industry and alleviate the financial pressures on both dealers and consumers,” Takyi Addo, Head of Communications for the Association stated.
The proposal was announced during a forum in Accra on February 7, where Dr. Bawumia, serving as Vice President and the NPP’s flagbearer, committed to easing the tax burden on spare parts imports should the NPP emerge victorious in the upcoming elections.
This policy is anticipated to significantly lower spare parts prices, providing relief to commercial drivers and the commuting public by potentially lowering transport fares.
The Association expressed its eagerness for the policy’s implementation, which hinges on the NPP’s success in the December 7, 2024 elections.
“This is not just about our industry; it’s about the broader impact on the economy and the everyday Ghanaian. We are ready to work with all stakeholders to see this through,” Addo added.
Takyi Addo urged members of the Abossey Okai Spare Parts Dealers Association to unite in support of this policy, considered pivotal for the industry’s growth and the nation’s economic development.
The Association extended its gratitude to Dr. Bawumia for his commitment to the welfare of the spare parts sector.
