29-year-old Vincent Aboubakar of Cameroon won the golden boot award of the Africa Cup of Nations tournament in Cameroon with 8 goals at the end of the competition.
The former FC Porto attacker was one goal shy of equaling the all time top scorer in a single Africa Cup of Nations which is held by Ndaye Mulamba of DR Congo who scored nine to win it for the then Zaire.
Aboubakar became the first player to score five goals in the group stage of the Africa Cup of Nations tournament history with two goals each against Burkina Faso and Ethiopia with one against Cape Verde Island.
He then followed it up with a goal against Comoros Island to take his tally to 6 before the quarter-final of the competition.
He then failed to score in two successive matches against Gabon at the quarter-final and in their semi-final defeat to Egypt last Thursday.
The leader of the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon came on as a sub in the third place playoffs against Burkina Faso to scored a brace to take his tally to 8 goals – a game the hosts went ahead to win on penalties to claim bronze medal.
He’s the first Cameroonian after Samuel Eto’o to win the prestigious award.
Eto’o is the all time top scorer in the history of the African Cup of Nations tournament with 18 goals and Aboubakar has 12 now chasing the record set by the three times champions league winner.
